In the cave's dim shadow beneath the lonely mountain, all is silent. A hot stillness rests over the vast desert of gold and treasures covering the ancient dwarf city of Dwarfhills and the formerly bustling hall; a treasure no human eye sees. The aftertaste of Erebor is not unafraid. Many decades have passed since the dragon Smaug departed south from the Withered Heath to attack the dwarves' kingdom. Swift and terrible was his arrival, where countless humans and dwarves died in fire and ruins. Now all is peaceful in the dragon's sleeping halls, serpent-like packed in his treasure. But this stillness is an illusion, for a dragon's envious mind never sleeps peacefully. Fevered dreams of thieves and usurpers make his sleep angry, eyes darting open and looking back and forth, the long serpent's neck suddenly rising to swivel around, counting the coins and plates, jewel-encrusted jewelry, his senses sharpened to signs that could betray the intrusion of greedy, careless fools. Smaug shares no adornment of his treasure, and as great and mighty as he is, doubt gnaws at the corners of his confidence, breaking his ability and damping him into a restless, broken, red-hot sleep.
Into this boiling mistrust and rage treads a simple hobbit with no thoughts of treasure. Driven by his duty to honor a naive promise to a friend and prove himself worthy of a Wizard's faith, Bilbo Baggins nervously traverses the hallowed gold. It is a simple act of astonishing courage that forces each nervous step, spilling drops of coins that become a cascade, a landslide of gold that in turn unleashes the world's monstrous wrath, changing history and foretelling a short and bloody siege: for Bilbo has awakened the dragon.
