When I draw character illustrations, my main focus is to capture the essence of line art and translate objects and spaces onto a two-dimensional surface. I feel that ukiyo-e represents both the origin of this method and one of its perfect forms. I am deeply honored to be able to display collaborative works alongside the great masterpieces and cultural traditions that have greatly influenced me. Hokusai’s paintings have iconic expressions that define each work — whether it’s the waves in The Great Wave off Kanagawa or cherry blossoms in Fuji Seen from Goten-yama at Shinagawa, on the Tokaido. These elements particularly blend well with Hatsune Miku, which can take on countless forms when combined with various concepts. I enjoyed creating this piece and hope that it serves as a doorway for viewers to explore the worlds of both Hokusai and Miku.
