The male Velociraptor mouth and eye replica from Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award®-winning science fiction sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park captures one of the franchise’s most feared predators. On Isla Sorna, the Velociraptors hunted survivors who ventured into the island’s dangerous interior.
For The Lost World: Jurassic Park, five practical effects were created to bring the raptors to life: three full-scale animatronics (one female and two males), an animatronic head and torso, and a pair of mechanical, wearable legs for foot sequences. These practical effects, along with ILM’s CGI work, were primarily used in two iconic scenes – the Long Grass massacre and the Worker Village hunt.
Due to The Lost World: Jurassic Park depicting both male and female raptors, a new and more vibrant color scheme was developed for the wild males, distinguishing them from the more monotonous gray-brown males seen in the original film. The wild pack's coloring was noticeably richer and more striking.
The ornate raptor eyes used in the film – with a sculpted yellow core center, orange lattice pattern, green lateral coloring, and a clear dental acrylic finish – were created by the team at Stan Winston Studio (SWS). During pre-production, the eye was placed in a fully detailed eye socket to demonstrate the dinosaurs’ potential eye movements to Steven Spielberg.
